A kidney transplant is a surgery performed to place a healthy kidney from another individual (the donor) and is placed into a patient’s body (the recipient). The healthy kidney may come from a living donor or a deceased organ donor. Family members or friends who are a good match and in good health may be able to donate one of their own kidneys. This type of transplant is called a living donor transplant.
People who donate a kidney may live long, healthy lives with the one (1) healthy remaining kidney. While transplantation is often preferred to dialysis, some patients are not appropriate candidates for transplantation. If you are interested in a kidney transplant, please consult with your doctor and SAHEL HEALTH clinical leadership to help decide which treatment or transplant option may be best.
